Though a native of the city of Teos, he spent much of his career at the courts of the tyrants Polycrates of Samos and Hipparchus of Athens, where he was particularly esteemed for his drinking songs and hymns. This edition of Anacreon's poems was printed by Henri Estienne, part of the Estienne (or Stephanus) printing dynasty.
