JM-215: Three scenes pertaining to the political barometer in the United States, China, and Russia in 1922
Description:
Editorial cartoon depicting political sentiments set in three different countries. In the top panel, centered in the United States, a group of men stand around a political barometer debating why the nomination of Republican, turned progressive, and then again Republican, Albert J. Beveridge for senator occurred. In the middle panel, centered on China, General Wu chases General Chang south while one of the injured warriors lies on the ground and says that Wu is hell. General Wu may refer to General Wu Pei-Fu, who was a warlord in China, mostly in the northern and central regions; he was rumored to be dead by General Chang in the Sacramento Union paper in May 1922. The bottom panel, centering on Russia, shows Uncle Sam sitting next to a representative of the Kerensky Government while Soviet Russia looks on and claims not to be related. Soviet Russia is the period of Russia after the tsar lost power in 1917 and before the creation of the Soviet Union in 1922; the government in this interim period was at first led by Prime Minister Prince Georgy Lvov and Minister of Justice Aleksandr Kerensky, but Lenin returned to Russia in 1917 and began to work on regaining his political supporters, which resulted in Kerensky and Lenin vying for power and support later in the interim period.

Soochow, now called Suzhou, is located in eastern China in Jiangsu Province. It is one of the oldest and most famous cities of China and also served as the capital in Chinese history. There is a popular and familiar quotation, "Heaven above, Soochow and Hangchow below."nnThis series of glass slides of Soochow, Mr. Hiller took totals thirty-one pieces with most taken by Mr. Hiller and several by his wife, Margaret Hiller. The photographs show they took a trip with jeeps in the countryside of Soochow. Hiller Collection: Drawer 09: Nanking
Description:
Nanking was the capital of China from 1912 to 1949 during the period of the Republic of China. Nanking is located in eastern China in Jiangsu Province. The reason that it is a famous and historical city is that it has been the capital six times in Chinese federal dynasty history.nnThe population in 1927 was 360, 500; it increased to 968, 942 in 1935, and in 1946 was over 1,000,000. nnThere are many historical and scenic sights in Nanking, such as the Ming Palace, O.M.E.A. (The Officers Moral Endeavor Association Building), Dr. Sun's Mausoleum, and Ling Kho Tze. These sights are all shown in Mr. Hiller's photographs clearly.nnThis series of glass slides of Nanking total eighty-four pieces with most taken by Mr. Hiller and several by his wife, Margaret Hiller. Besides visiting the popular tourist sights, they also visited city streets and captured the daily life of the Nanking people and countryside. Description:
<p>The Hiller Collection documents cities, industries, farming, and everyday life in China during the second phase of the Chinese Civil War, 1945-1948. Of interest are also documentation of transportation and family life among Americans abroad. The collection has material of potential interest for researchers of the history of China, agriculture, and the American military.</p>n<br />n<p>The collection is housed in the Special Collections and Rare Books Department located in Ellis Library.
