Image
Near the mid-20th century, the University funded Rothwell, completing the plans for a second floor of the gymnasium. Here is a photo from February 25, 1950. Mrs. Frederick Middlebush is snipping the ribbon to formally open Rothwell's addition.

1930 - Basketball inside Brewer Fieldhouse

Image
Brewer-Fieldhouse was named after Chester L. Brewer, a football, baseball, and basketball coach for Missouri in the early 20th century. In 1923, Brewer became the Director of Athletics at the University, and his past with Mizzou athletics brought a lot of vitality to the campus. The field house joined Rothwell Gymnasium and extended into Rollins Field, and the complex allowed basketball and track teams to practice during times of the year when they originally could not. The structure protected athletes from cold weather and rain, and ability to train during these cases pushed Mizzou to a new era of athletics.

1904 - Construction of Rothwell Gymnasium

Image
Constructed in 1904, Rothwell originally cost the University $70,000. Originally, the building was three stories high in the front and two stories high in the back, and the construction was engineered for later additions. Materially, the entire building had hardwood floors and the walls were built with gray stone.

1910 - An early look at Rothwell Gymnasium

Image
Rothwell looks a lot more expansive that it did a hundred years ago, but the 1910 gymnasium did have a lot of facilities. The complex had a 4-person track, an aquatic center, an outdoor gym, a trophy room, and more. While the modern Student Rec Center holds a lot more amenities, the original Rothwell was one of the most advanced gyms in the Midwest at the time.

1969 - Construction of Hearnes Center

Construction of the new basketball arena began in 1969, officially opening in 1972. Construction strikes and the lack of funds caused the auditorium's slow development. The 1971 Kansas-Missouri game was supposed to close Brewer Fieldhouse as the basketball arena, but Hearnes hadn't yet been fully built.

1900 - Section of the Women's Gymnasium

The Women's Gym began small and simple, as one can see in this photo. Later, in 1922, the University constructed McKee Gymnasium. McKee was also women-specific, but gave them many more amenities in the gymnasium.
