1929 - Construction of Brewer Fieldhouse

Image
Construction of Brewer Fieldhouse began in 1929, but the facility was not declared open until the following year. Compared to the modern Hearnes Center--which cost $10.5 million to build--Brewer only cost $225,000. Rough stone walls bordered the building, the floor consisted of dirt, and sounds echoed back from the wooden roofs. The building, though, was one of the best back in 1929.

1973 - Retiring Brewer Fieldhouse

Image
In 1929, Brewer was one of the finest facilities in the Midwest and the Big Six conference. But the building grew old and was replaced by the $10.5 million Hearnes Center. In the late 60's, upon construction of the Hearnes Complex, Brewer Fieldhouse ceased in activity significantly. The basketball team no longer played on Fieldhouse's wooden court, switching to Hearne's tartan floor in 1972. But rather than tear Brewer-Fieldhouse down, funds were dedicated to it. New courts, tracks, and locker rooms were planned. Brewer-Fieldhouse would reopen in 1975.

The Columns weren't always just columns. Before Jesse Hall was erected, "Academic Hall" stood at the epicenter of campus and its activities. However, in 1892, this building burned down, leaving the six columns.

This picture from the 1930 displays the complete construction of the original tower. However, the tower stood alone for quite sometime. It wasn't until 1950 that the north wing would finally come about.

1892 - Burning of the original Academic Hall

Image
In 1892, The University of Missouri's original Academic Hall burned down, leaving six columns. People say that the fire had been caused by the first electric light bulb west of the Mississippi River. The fire even spread as far as the Chancellor's Residence, but no significant damage was caused to it. "New" Academic Hall--later called Jesse Hall--was constructed in 1893. The Columns stand today as the iconic remains of the original Academic Hall.

Construction on Jesse in 1953. The East Wing Auditorium was completed in 1954. The original entrance to the auditorium was from the quad on the north side and seated 1,200 people. However, its wooden balcony was removed after being proclaimed a fire hazard. In 1953, renovations took place, and today it seats 1,732 people.
